Letter from the editor: So long but not good-bye

Send to friendSend to friend
With deep regret, I must report that I am stepping down as editor of Union Democracy Review. Starting in 1958, I have been responsible for these 193 issues of UDR, 42 issues of its predecessor, Union Democracy in Action, and a few special issues.  It adds up to 239 numbers over a period of around 53 years.  I have no idea if that’'s any kind of record for this type of  social cause publication. But it surely is an interesting statistical footnote.

For me, these have been rewarding years, and productive. UDR has served as far more than an arena for reporting on union democracy as an interesting subject for discussion. It has been dedicated and involved; it has brought together union activists, workers rights attorneys, labor educators, and civil libertarians, combining their efforts as an effective force for the cause. They have bolstered democracy in the labor movement and strengthened union democracy law in the nation.

I'd love to stay at it indefinitely. But the inexorable biological laws of geriatric wear and tear triumph over mere human desire. At the age of 96, I find it impossible to fulfill the heavy responsibilities of editorship. However, this is so long, but not good-bye.  I hope to write frequently for UDR at the editor’'s request, and I will remain available for consultation with unionists with union democracy problems who come to UDR for guidance.

After all these years, I might be asked for sage comments on the lessons of this broad experience: What would you like UDR readers to remember? Answer: The Association for Union Democracy deserves your support. Increase it! I intend to.   - HB
