The following is an excerpt from a letter by a longtime leader of union operating engineers in California. Printed with permission.
Over the course of the past two years I have been fighting for the "Democratic Cause" within the IUOE here at my Local Union (Operating Engineers Local 501) and within the IUOE in general. As a former "insider" I was always warned away from the AUD "nut-jobs" and so it was with great apprehension that I originally approached you. How wrong I was! Over the course of the past two years you have given me strength, courage, friendship and belief that "old time Unionism" still exists. I have found your organization to be one of the best. Your help in publicizing our conflicts have kept the membership of Local 501 active and believing in the realities of Union Democracy. Not only have I become a member, I have recommended membership continually throughout our struggles (I hope many people have joined).
