Frank Schonfeld, an eminent spokesman and leader in the battle for union democracy, died in November at the age of 95. A memorial gathering is planned for Sunday, February 26, 2012, at 2:00 p.m., to be held at Vladeck Hall, 74 Van Cortlandt Park South (corner Hillman Avenue), Bronx, NY 10463.

  • In Memoriam: Frank Schonfeld

Frank Schonfeld, an eminent spokesman and leader in the battle for union democracy, died in November at the age of 95.  In 1962, while a working painter, he organized a new reform caucus in the New York City Painters District Council 9, then a union of about 12,000, and heavily influenced by organized crime. Schonfeld ran well, but unsuccessfully, for the top job of secretary treasurer against Martin Rarback, a former radical who had made his peace with the racketeers who dominated the union.

Registered nurses in New York State Nurses Association are embroiled in a bitter factional fight over how they should be linked to organized labor. In a non-binding opinion poll, 60% of the voters, 2,312 to 1,533, rejected a proposal to disaffiliate from one AFL-CIO collective bargaining unit. But the battle continues. The urgent question is whether the association officialdom which, despite disclaimers, obviously favors disaffiliation, will resolve the disputed issue democratically or whether it will try to steamroller its opposition.
